    Louis, Mississippi, to Richmond Barthé and Marie Clementine Robateau. Barthé's father died at the age of 22, when he was only a few months old, leaving his mother to raise him alone. She worked as a dressmaker and before Barthé began elementary school she remarried to William Franklin, with whom she eventually had five additional child
